Leclanche's Marine Rack System

YVERDON-LES-BAINS, Switzerland and COPENHAGEN, 4 April 2022 - At the upcoming Danish Maritime Fair, Leclanché SA (SIX: LECN), one of the world’s leading energy storage solutions companies, will provide a detailed look at the full range of maritime vessel electrification projects it has completed or is currently developing throughout Europe and North America.

Leclanché, exhibiting at the Tivoli Congress Center in Copenhagen from April 26 to 28, will also be displaying its port-side fast charging infrastructure solution for ports and harbours. It enables fast charging of electric and hybrid vessels while also reducing power demand on the harbour grid by acting as a buffer.

The company’s MRS is rapidly becoming a maritime industry standard. Its energy storage systems provide all-electric and hybrid power solutions that bring game-changing efficiencies and reduce the environmental impact of all vessel types – helping vessel owners and operators meet and surpass international marine regulations for SOx and NOx emissions. Typical customer applications include passenger ferries; roll-on, roll-off (RoRo) vessels, container ships and oil and gas platforms.

Leclanché is one of the only electrification suppliers to manufacture its own lithium-ion battery cells to exacting standards in its German manufacturing facility. In addition, it manufactures modules on its state-of-the-art automated assembly line, in Yverdon, Switzerland. Its MRS system is modular and scalable and designed to the highest safety standards including an integrated liquid-cooling system. It has also undergone numerous thermal propagation tests and been certified by DNV as well as all other major certification bodies.

High-profile reference vessels, all utilizing Leclanché lithium-ion battery technology, include:

  • Grimaldi Lines, which is now operating six of nine hybrid RoRo ferries, all equipped with 5.1 MWh Leclanché battery systems, in the Mediterranean Sea connecting Italy, Malta and Spain.
  • E-ferry Ellen, funded by the municipality of Aerø, Denmark, and by the European Union through the Horizon 2020 and Innovation Program. The 100% electric car and passenger ferry has a 4.3 MWh capacity battery system allowing her to travel up to 22 nautical miles on a single 25-minute fast charge and has been in continuous commercial operation since 2019. Ellen won the European Solar Prize Award presented by non-profit EUROSOLAR for her ability to demonstrate the potential of green electric mobility in shipping.
  • The Wasaline Aurora Botnia car and passenger ferry, one of the world’s most environmentally friendly RoRo passenger ferries using both a liquified natural gas (LNG) engine and a 2.4 MWh lithium-ion battery system for use during entry to and exit from port. Wasaline received the Ropax Ferry of the Year Award for the vessel’s environmental accomplishments at the 2020 Ferry Shipping Summit in Amsterdam.
  • Yara Birkeland, the world’s first autonomous and fully electric container ship, scheduled to soon begin regular commercial operation on a route of around 13 nautical miles (24 km) off the coast of Norway and fully powered by a Leclanché 6.5 MWh battery system.
  • The Amherst Islander II (1.9 MWh capacity battery system) and The Wolfe Islander IV (4.6 MWh battery storage system) are North America’s first of their kind all-electric e-ferries. Built by Damen Shipyards Group for the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, the two vessels have been transported to Canada where they are expected to begin regular passenger service on Lake Ontario in 2022.
